The Postgraduate Program in Rural Extension – PPGEXR, located in the city of Santa Maria, state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, already has a rich history of an arduous struggle to overcome approximately 48 years of existence, which It began in 1975 and continues to this day (2023). In addition to seeking the implementation of changes that made it possible to favor society and the scientific academic world, through its “fruits” generated by the research carried out. And almost five decades of struggles and glories have passed, which culminated in the achievement of a grade 5 in the latest CAPES assessment (2017-2022) and which will continue to grow more and more, through the efforts of students (master's and doctoral students/ them), graduates, teachers and employees.

It is worth remembering that PPGEXR, due to its long existence, has undergone structural and nomenclature changes, such as the change from the Postgraduate Program in Agricultural Education and Rural Extension to its current name, which is Postgraduate Program in Rural Extension (prevailing). As a result, the program stopped following an approach centered on the paradigm of the diffusion of innovation through extension workers with farmers, to follow a more pluralistic approach focused on views of political economy, anthropological and sociological studies, with a focus on rural areas and family farming. , favored through the productions of researchers from different areas resulting from its interdisciplinarity.

The 5th Rural Extension and Development Colloquium is promoted by PPGEXR, from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), in addition to being part of an effort by PPGEXR through its Master's and Doctorate students, to encourage open discussions with the community about the current rural context.

In this sense, in 2018 it resulted in the first event called “1st Colloquium on Rural Extension and Development: Perspectives on Brazilian rural areas”; The second, in 2019, was called “2nd Rural Extension Colloquium: Research and Development in Rural Extension”; The third took place in 2021, called “3rd Rural Extension Colloquium: Perspectives on Brazilian rural areas and dialogue with international experiences”; The edition held in 2022 was called “4th Extension and Development Colloquium - Diversities and Current Affairs: actions and reflections for ruralities”. Finally, in 2023 the 5th RURAL EXTENSION AND DEVELOPMENT COLLOQUIUM - Public Policies and Innovations for the Brazilian Rural Area: Climate Change and Challenges for Reconstruction will take place.

This year, the 5th Colloquium once again seeks to innovate, aiming at participation and the construction of knowledge in multiple ways, with the consolidation of new bases to contribute to the expansion of research in the field of Rural Extension and Development. It will now be carried out in a hybrid format (clarified below), enabling the broad participation of people linked to the academic community, both from the region around UFSM and from other Brazilian and foreign states.
